xunantunichThe Mayan Ceremonial Center of Xunantunich is located in the western district of Cayo, and lies on a natural limestone ridge which allows it to offer a panoramic view of the hilly Cayo district.


Situated only two miles from the Guatemalan border you get an amazing view of the Guatemalan border town of Santa Elena . The largest temple, “El Castillo”, has been excavated and partially restored giving visitors an idea of the creativity of the Mayas.


Three carved stelae found on the site are also on exhibit. The introductory site history and display center at the entrance of this famous Mayan Ceremonial Center is one of the major attractions. The site has three plazas and a partially excavated ball court. After your visit, enjoy lunch at a San Ignacio Town restaurant before returning to Belize City.
